Comitti London was founded in 1845 by Onorato Comitti, an Italian precision instrument manufacturer who moved to England and began developing and manufacturing barometers. Onorato Comitti opened his first workshop in 1850 with other manufacturers in Clerkenwell, London. He produced a number of recording instruments, including mercury and aneroid barometers. Comitti attempted to copyright the text on the face of one of his newly developed barometers; but was refused, with the resulting lawsuit used as an example in copyright books.
At the end of the Victorian period, the company expanded its line to include clocks, receiving an Honorary Diploma for the company's excellence in 1888. For the Diamond Jubilee of Queen Elizabeth II, Comitti created an architectural grandfather clock with an English regulator, which is now in Buckingham Palace. Comitti remains a family business run by the fifth generation. The company continues to produce traditional luxury clocks. Some of the company's older designs have become collectibles.
